Intelligence Quotient (IQ) tests are intelligence tests that are designed to measure an individual’s level of intelligence. The scores associated with these tests have been shown to be associated with mortality and morbidity, parental IQ and parental social status. The role of heredity in intelligence has been discussed for almost 100 years, with controversy still remaining. The first test that was developed on a large scale was done in China, with modern testing beginning in the nineteenth century in France. These tests specifically contributed to the separation of mental illness and mental retardation. Some of the more well-known intelligence tests that are used in modern times include Raven’s Progressive Matrices, Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children, Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Stanford-Binet, Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children.
